FAQs

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE INITIAL CONSULTATION OR IN MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

The initial consultation is an opportunity for me to hear about what’s brought you to therapy and understand your goal in seeking treatment.  This is 10 minutes and free of charge.  During our first appointment I take a full history which includes collecting contact information, details about your upbringing, and other areas of your life pertinent to your current situation.

HOW DO DECIDE YOUR FEE AND HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?

The fee I charge is based on a number of factors including years in the field, expertise, and costs associated with keeping my accreditation up to date.  The T&C’s include my fee and sessions are 50 minutes.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

Afraid not.  Insurance companies often charge high rates (which is why you see some therapists charging upwards of £200 per session–this is so they can cover the fee insurance companies charge them).  They also monitor client progress and can request access to your file if they feel your condition has become chronic.  I’ve taken the decision to keep my rates affordable and accessible without the hassle of you having to go through your insurance.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I SEE YOU?

Upon entering into therapy, I recommend weekly sessions for the initial stage of treatment which is around 6-8 weeks.  Following that and depending on your needs we can discuss if fortnightly sessions are more suitable.

HOW LONG WILL I NEED TO BE IN THERAPY?

That depends on what you’d like to work on.  Entering into therapy can be a big commitment both emotionally and financially.  The number of sessions varies with each client and this can be discussed during our first appointment.

WHAT’S YOUR AVAILABILITY?

I have slots available Monday evening, Thursday mid-morning and afternoon, and Friday morning.

HOW ARE MY SESSIONS KEPT CONFIDENTIAL?

I take your confidentiality very seriously and abide by the BACP and UKCP code of ethics regarding client records and sessions.  This is covered in my T&Cs and can be discussed in more detail at our first meeting.  Should I at any time believe there is a risk to your safety or the safety of others, I may need to contact emergency services or your GP.  I would always try and discuss this with you first.

ARE ONLINE SESSIONS JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS FACE TO FACE?

Pre-pandemic online sessions were not widely recommended or offered.  However, post pandemic we’ve proven that online sessions are just as beneficial as seeing your therapist in person.  There are of course some limitations regarding how we might use things like art and role-play, but I’ve found these types of interventions can be adjusted for use online.  The biggest barrier to treatment is unfortunately an unstable wifi connection–so if your preference is for online, please ensure (as much as we can) you won’t have an issue with this.
